Utility/Audience

This guide is designed for those who are seeking a scholarly and deconstructed perspective on Japanese animation, fandom culture, as well as gender studies. Although the main target demographic is film/media students or pop culture researchers, really this is for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the genre. Users will benefit from pre-filtered citations paired with critical summaries, ultimately this site is for saving research time when navigating academic databases.

But Why This Topic?

I chose this topic not just because of the fact that Magical Girls as a genre are near and dear to my heart (as I have loved them since I was a young child watching anime with my parents), but because of a specific article in a book I read when I was in high school as I had a research project about fan culture. The article was titled “Magic, Shojo, and Metamorphosis: Magical Girl Anime & The Challenges of Changing Gender Identity in Japanese Society” (by Kumiko Saiko). This article has stuck with me for years and provided a rare introspective look into why people love these types of series and provided a sense of relatability and connection within myself (depsite not being a Japanese woman myself, but I believe we all suffer from some sort of patriarch/gender conformities and identities), so I really wanted to research more into this topic.
